How Your Dental Hygienist Can Help Your Smile

Making people smile is our specialty, whether it’s by ensuring that people feel more comfortable in the dental chair, by quelling dental phobias or by helping people improve their smiles through cosmetic treatments. Everyone from dentists to dental hygienists plays a major role in helping people maintain and achieving beautiful smiles. Wondering what our dental hygienists had to go through before they started working for our Laramie, WY, dental practice?

Let’s first find out what a dental hygienist does…

You may already remember from our last appointment that our Laramie, WY, dental hygienists were some of the first faces you saw when starting your dental check-up. A dental hygienist works closely with the dentist to understand the needs of each patient. Just like our dentists, a hygienist is focused on preventive measures to keep teeth healthy.

A hygienist will,

  • Go through your medical history
  • Ask you questions about your oral health and any problems you may be experiencing
  • Examine your mouth
  • Thoroughly cleaning your teeth and gums by removing plaque and tartar and polishing your teeth
  • Educate you on how to properly care for and clean your smile at home
  • Take X-rays of your mouth (this happens about once a year for most patients)
  • Provide other preventive dental options including fluoride treatment
  • Assist the dentist in certain surgical procedures

What is the education and training like for a dental hygienist?

Some dental hygienist positions only require an associate’s degree in dental hygiene; however, those who are interested in advancing further within their position may choose to get a bachelor’s degree and even a master’s. While there are online programs for dental hygiene it’s important to recognize that getting hands-on training is invaluable when it comes to building the skills and knowledge for the job.
